- Existing Ray-Ban glasses upgraded with longer battery life and better camera (does not include display)
- Sport glasses: Oakley Vanguard launched, available 21 October 2025
Last week Meta Platforms launched its first consumer-ready smart glasses with a built-in display, seeking to extend the momentum of its Ray-Ban line of “smart glasses”.
Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated the Meta Ray-Ban Display and a new wristband controller at Meta’s recent Connect event, held at its Menlo Park, California, headquarters, despite some alleged initial demo problems, such as initially failing to put a call through the glasses. Zuckerberg commented:
“Glasses are the ideal form factor for personal superintelligence, because they let you stay present in the moment while getting access to all of these AI capabilities that make you smarter, help you communicate better, improve your memory, improve your senses, and more.”
The new Display glasses have a small digital display in the right lens for basic tasks such as notifications.
The display glasses are priced at US$799, and are scheduled for US availability on 30 September 2025. Included in the price is a wristband that translates hand gestures into commands such as responding to texts and calls, with the ability to translate from other languages.
Features include:
- 600x600p hi-res full-colour display built into the right lens
- 6-mic array and open-ear speakers with Bluetooth connectivity
- 12MP camera with 3X zoom and a viewfinder on the in-lens display
- Up to 6 hours of continuous mixed-use battery life per charge and up to 30 total hours of battery life with fully charged case
Meta used the opportunity to showcase a new pair of Oakley-branded glasses called Vanguard aimed at athletes and priced at US$499. The device integrates with fitness platforms such as Garmin and Strava to deliver real-time training stats and post-workout summaries and offers nine hours of battery life. Vanguard will be available starting 21 October 2025.
Meta revealed it has updated its previous Ray-Ban line, which does not have a built-in display but future models will now offer almost twice the battery life of the earlier generation and include a better camera, retailing at US$379.
All the devices have existing features such as Meta’s AI assistant, cameras, hands-free control and livestreaming to the company’s social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram.
The new display glasses come as Meta is facing scrutiny over its handling of child safety on its social media platforms with Meta chatbots.
“It’s great value for the tech you’re getting,” Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, said of the Display glasses. “Until we get there, it’s not really a device that the average consumer might know about or care to purchase,” Ubrani said.
IDC forecasts worldwide shipments of augmented reality/virtual reality headsets and display-less smart glasses will increase by 39.2% in 2025 to 14.3 million units.
