Community Fibre Connects London’s First 8.5 Gbps Residential Broadband Customer

Community Fibre has connected London’s first 8.5 Gbps residential broadband customer, increasing the broadband speed from 5 Gbps to 8.5 Gbps.

Installed in Beckton, in the London Borough of Newham, on 16 September 2026, the connection marks the residential debut of Community Fibre’s 8.5 Gbps product, designed for customers with the most demanding connectivity requirements and future-proof connectivity for hopefully years to come.

High Home Demand

As homes increasingly rely on cloud services, AI-powered applications, immersive digital experiences, ultra-high-definition streaming, advanced gaming and dozens of connected devices, demand for faster and more resilient full fibre broadband continues to accelerate. Multi-gigabit connectivity is rapidly moving from a luxury to a necessity.

Average household broadband data consumption has increased sixfold over the last decade and is expected to continue to rise dramatically as more people move to full fibre and have the connectivity bottleneck removed.

Community Fibre’s new 8.5 Gbps package is fully symmetrical, delivering equally impressive upload and download speeds across its full fibre network, whether customers are downloading content, backing up data to the cloud, live streaming or joining high-definition video calls, regardless if multiple devices and data-hungry applications are running at the same time.

Peter Rampling, Chief Commercial Officer at Community Fibre, has said:

“Every major advance in connectivity has changed how people live, work and interact with technology. What once felt unnecessary quickly becomes indispensable. Bringing 8.5 Gbps broadband into a London home is another significant step in that journey. It demonstrates what’s possible when world-class infrastructure is paired with relentless innovation and long-term investment.

With more than 450,000 customers Community Fibre continues to invest in expanding access to the fastest broadband services available in the capital. Community Fibre owns and operates its full fibre network, which passes 1.4 million homes across and around London, with more than 185,000 London-based businesses within 200 metres of its infrastructure.
