BlackBerry transitions into a Growth Company

BlackBerry as a company is best known for its early dominance in smartphones during the 2000s. It pioneered secure mobile email and physical keyboard devices, becoming especially popular with businesses and governments. However, it lost market share rapidly after the rise of Apple’s iPhone and Android devices.

Today, BlackBerry has transformed into a software and cybersecurity company. Its core focus areas include endpoint security, secure communications, and embedded systems. One of its key assets is QNX, a real-time operating system widely used in automotive systems, including advanced driver assistance and infotainment.

BlackBerry also provides cybersecurity solutions through products like Cylance, which uses AI to detect and prevent threats. The company serves industries such as government, finance, healthcare, and automotive.

Positive Financial Reporting

BlackBerry recently reported its Fourth Quarter and Full Fiscal Year 2026 ( y/e 28 February 2026) results. The reports show a 10% year-over-year revenue growth for Q4 2025 and a return to top-line growth for fiscal year 2026. The total company revenue was up 3% year-over-year.

QNX reports record 14% growth for the full fiscal year, and Secure Communications returns to year-over-year revenue growth for the quarter, driven by accelerating demand for digital sovereignty solutions and expanding defence budgets.

QNX

BlackBerry QNX is a real-time operating system designed for systems that require high reliability, security, and fast response times. It is widely used in automotive systems, powering infotainment, digital dashboards, and advanced driver assistance systems. QNX is known for its microkernel architecture, which improves stability and allows systems to keep running even if one component fails.

Beyond automotive, it is also used in industrial, medical, and embedded systems where safety and uptime are critical. Today, QNX is a key part of BlackBerry’s strategy in the connected and autonomous vehicle market.

John J. Giamatteo, CEO of BlackBerry has commented:

“Since our leadership transition in 2023, we have been focused on a clear goal: to transform BlackBerry into a profitable growth company. Our performance this quarter and over the past year demonstrates that we are delivering. QNX is now a Rule of 40 business, and a clear leader in automotive, embedded in more than 275 million vehicles worldwide, with growing momentum in robotics, physical AI, and other adjacent markets. Secure Communications has returned to growth, driven by a real and accelerating digital sovereignty tailwind…. We are no longer a company in transition. We are a growth company with a proven track record of execution, and we are well positioned for the path ahead.”

BlackBerry’s financial outlook for 2027 is cautiously positive, with a focus on steady growth and improving profitability rather than explosive expansion. Rather than competing in hardware, BlackBerry now positions itself as a trusted provider of secure software and infrastructure for connected devices and critical systems.
