Telefónica Spain Selects Red Hat OpenShift

Red Hat has announced that Telefónica Spain is standardising on Red Hat OpenShift as the common platform for its IT workloads and cloud-native network functions (CNFs), and integrating Red Hat OpenStack Services on OpenShift to modernise its virtualized infrastructure on a unified foundation.

Telefónica Spain will be able to streamline management across disparate environments, enabling both virtual machines (VMs) and cloud-native applications to run side by side while retaining the architectural agility to rapidly scale 5G and edge services.

Marina Huertas García, Head of IT systems and transformation, at Telefónica Spain comments:

“At Telefónica, we are committed to enterprise open source as rocket fuel for the transformation of our systems. Through several years of strategic collaboration with Red Hat we have been able to contribute our real world requirements into community development and see them transform into features and functions in Red Hat OpenShift. The operational maturity and expertise we have built with Red Hat positions us to move beyond simple digitalization.”

Phased adoption

As part of Telefónica’s phased adoption strategy, all new workloads will be deployed on Red Hat OpenShift. In doing so, it gains greater flexibility, efficiency and resiliency while maintaining performance for compelling new applications and 5G services. With this hybrid architecture in place, Telefónica has the portability to scale workloads across any environment, including Azure, AWS and Google Cloud.

A very high percentage of services for Telefónica’s residential customer management processes are already in production on Red Hat OpenShift. Previously, scaling capacity required weeks; now it can be done in seconds.

In a quarter of the time

Overall, Telefónica has reduced application deployment times from a window of eight hours to as little as 90 minutes with Red Hat OpenShift, significantly reducing the scope for incidents and service degradation.

Managing one common platform reduces silos and improves collaboration between teams to speed up problem solving and innovation. With Red Hat OpenShift, Telefónica centralises updates, logging and security monitoring, while end users benefit from more reliable network performance and faster service releases.

Rich Stephens, Vice President, EMEA Telecommunications, at Red Hat, stated:

“Telefónica is driving competitive advantage by unifying virtualized and cloud-native apps for both its IT and network operations with Red Hat’s hybrid cloud technologies. The flexible, common platform provided by Red Hat OpenShift has helped Telefónica improve time-to-market, operational efficiency and application reliability, better preparing the service provider to deliver a new generation of compelling 5G and edge services across Spain.”
