Back from Holiday? Look and Lock before you Log in

Today is considered the first major working day of the year for many, with a significant proportion of the workforce expected to have resumed their jobs after the Christmas and New Year break. After time away, it’s important to take a few simple steps to keep systems secure and running smoothly.

  1. Update before you log in

Run system updates as soon as you return. Operating systems, browsers and security tools often update while you’re away, and delaying them can leave vulnerabilities exposed. So, if you have clicked “remind me later”, don’t delay for too long.

  1. Change passwords if prompted

If your organisation requires periodic password changes, do it immediately. Never reuse old passwords, especially if you logged in on shared or public devices while travelling. Try not to use the numbers “2026” either.

  1. Be cautious with emails

Expect a backlog and stay alert. Cybercriminals often exploit ‘out of office’ gaps with phishing emails disguised as urgent requests or missed invoices. Be selective with what you open.

  1. Check devices for unusual activity

If a laptop or phone was left unused, look for unfamiliar apps, warnings or performance issues before resuming normal work.

  1. Secure Wi-Fi connections

If you worked remotely while travelling, disconnect from public or hotel networks and reconnect only to trusted, secured Wi-Fi.

  1. Restart devices

A simple reboot can complete pending updates, close background processes and help security tools reset properly.

  1. Review access and permissions

Confirm you still need access to all systems and shared folders. Flag anything that looks unfamiliar or unnecessary to IT.

  1. Use VPNs and approved tools

When accessing company systems, always use approved VPNs and software, especially after travelling internationally.

  1. Back up important files

Ensure work files are backed up to approved cloud or network storage in case anything went wrong while you were away.

  1. Report anything suspicious

If something doesn’t look right, report it immediately. Early reporting helps prevent small issues becoming major incidents.

A few smart checks on your first day back can keep your data safe, your systems secure, and your return to work stress-free. Enjoy 2026!
